Our research department conducts joint researches with the Institute of Industrial Science R&D centers and university corporation laboratories on renewable natural energy (geothermal, cogeneration, fuel cells) in an effort to achieve a low carbon environmental society for the development of a new generation of world class products.
The Successful Development of “Exhaust Gas Power Generating Systems,”. Generating usable power from the engine exhaust and heat transfer.
The Engine, starting with the Automobile, has had a variety of industrial applications. From an efficiency viewpoint, only a third of an engine’s energy is derived from it’s fuel source while the rest is dissipated as heat and gas exhaust.

In collaboration with the independent administration group of the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Atsumitec has developed a system that generates power with the unused energy from the engine’s excess heat and exhaust gas.

There are slight amounts of fuel such as hydrogen and hydrocarbons that remain in the engine’s exhaust gas.

Atsumitec and AIST took these trace amounts of unused fuel in the exhaust gas to develop a fuel cell (individual oxide fuel cell) capable of generating usable power.

Additionally, exhaust gas expels heat at the same time. There are technological advances using thermoelectric conversion material to generate power using this unused heat. When one material side is a higher temp, when compared with the opposite side , the advanced material emits power based on the temperature difference.

When a fuel cell generates power a chemical reaction occurs thereby creating chemical reaction heat. By integrating the thermoelectric conversion material with the fuel cell, the use of both heat from exhaust gases and heat generated from the temperature variation of the fuel cell provides a larger temperature difference, Atsumitec can achieve success in producing the "Exhaust Gas Power Generating System."

Not only can the “Exhaust Gas Power Generating System” be used for both automobiles and motorcycles, it is possible to generate power from a manufacturing facilities’ exhaust gases as well.

Fuel cell power from unused fuel (remaining gas) in the exhaust gases, plus the power from the thermoelectric conversion unit created from waste heat, can add up to 400W of generated power.

Hydrogen Detection Technology Research
In order to safely celebrate the new era of hydrogen energy as the ultimate renewable energy source, we are developing technology for the detection of hydrogen. Our hydrogen detection technology is different from commonly used hydrogen detection methodology. We trim down hydrogen storage alloy film to a nano micron level so it reacts to hydrogen by turning transparent. This allows us to make the hydrogen visible without requiring any external energy. This color changing trait (variant permeability in response to hydrogen) allows us to detect hydrogen using transmission or reflection of light.
